J.H. Cohn and Michael Cohen, Managing Partner of J.H. Cohn’s Roseland office and director of the J.H. Cohn Foundation, were honored to be named the 2007 “Corporate Citizen of the Year” in NJBIZ’s Business of the Year Awards.
Our Commitment
In 1919, Julius H. Cohn founded J.H. Cohn on this business philosophy: “If you do your best to serve faithfully your community, your clients, and your associates, success will most surely follow.” This philosophy continues to be the hallmark of J.H. Cohn today.
Through events held by the J.H. Cohn Foundation, Cohn for Kids supports children in need, from young children to college students. We pride ourselves on rolling up our sleeves for worthy causes and have to date raised more than $1 million. The four Cohn for Kids supported organizations are the New Jersey, Metro New York, Hudson Valley, and Connecticut chapters Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and the Medhen Orphan Relief Effort (M.O.R.E.).
Our fundraising activities involve more than writing a check. Employees and partners get personally involved to support these worthwhile organizations. Each year, J.H. Cohn holds several fundraisers for the Cohn for Kids charitable organizations. Major events include the employee Bowl-A-Thon, which has become a yearly tradition at the Firm and benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In addition, the J.H. Cohn Annual Charity Golf Invitational donates 100 percent of its proceeds to charities dedicated to improving the lives of children in need, including the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.

BEYOND COHN FOR KIDS
J.H. Cohn’s commitment to “giving back” goes beyond supporting the Cohn for Kids charities. Individually, our employees support a range of causes. The Firm also rallies behind other initiatives.
Office Collection Turns into Firm-Wide Fundraising Success
In one of many initiatives that exemplifies the Firm’s philosophy of “giving back,” in 2007, J.H. Cohn raised nearly $12,000 to purchase supplies, such as toothpaste and shampoo, for U.S. troops serving in Iraq.
What started as a collection in one office for items to include in care packages for troops turned into a Firm-wide fundraiser that garnered enough donations to cover several months’ worth of supplies. The fundraiser was initiated when a J.H. Cohn office began collecting supplies, such as soap, toothpaste, and shampoo, for U.S. troops in Iraq. Then, the J.H. Cohn Foundation reached out to employees to collect donations that would be used to buy needed supplies. Within three weeks, nearly $12,000 was raised. The proceeds were used to purchase and ship supplies for distribution to the troops they served with in Iraq.
Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital
In 1997, J.H. Cohn's White Plains office turned its attention to a proposed children’s hospital at Westchester Medical Center. To date, the fundraising efforts for the hospital have totaled more than $2 million.
Support for the Children’s Hospital began in 1997 when Arnold Marden, co-managing partner of J.H. Cohn’s White Plains office, became involved with the Westchester Medical Center. At the time, the children’s hospital was just a floor of a county hospital, but plans for a new center, including the Marden, Harrison & Kreuter Oncology Wing, were underway. The state-of-the-art, family-centered Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital opened its doors in September 2004.
The office has been intimately involved in the development of the new hospital. Arny Marden, who has a long history of raising funds for pediatric cancer research, has served as the chairman of the Children’s Hospital Foundation’s finance committee and a member of both the executive committee of the Foundation and of the original building committee.
“This hospital offers more than a high level of medical care, the focus has also been on the environment for the children and their families,” said Arny. “The hospital is extremely child-friendly—it’s colorful and educational. There are murals on the walls, a miniature golf course outside, a performing arts stage, and interactive activities, plus kids can play on a fire truck that was donated to the hospital, or on a boat in the sailing wing.”
The hospital, which includes a regional trauma center, offers care to children throughout New York’s Hudson Valley as well as New Jersey and Connecticut. It features one of the only in-house Ronald McDonald facilities with a living room, kitchen, and five family suites.
Plans for the hospital continue. The 14th annual golf outing raised $175,000, which has been put toward the conversion of a previously unused terrace space to create Simon’s Garden, an enclosed atrium in the style of a Tuscan terrace and an interactive play area. This space will give children who cannot go outdoors due to their susceptible immune systems a place to play and spend time with their families.
