J.H. Cohn LLP Surpasses $1 Million Fundraising Mark for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Jersey

7/19/2010

The Firm, Raising Money Through Employee Contributions, Becomes Top Corporate Fundraiser for Child-Focused Charity

J.H. Cohn LLP, one of the top 15 accounting and consulting firms in the United States, raised more than $126,000 at its ninth annual employee Bowl-A-Thon benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Jersey. This brings the total raised for Make-A-Wish by the Firm over the last nine years through employee fundraising, donations, and raffles to more than $1 million.

Make-A-Wish, one of the J.H. Cohn Foundation’s Cohn for KidsSM supported charities, depends on donations to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. Over the next two months alone, more than 100 children in New Jersey will see their wishes fulfilled.

“As our top corporate donor in New Jersey, we continue to be overwhelmed by the enthusiastic support of J.H. Cohn and their employees,” said Thomas P. Weatherall, President and CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of New Jersey. “Thanks to their extraordinary efforts, many more children with life-threatening medical conditions will have their wishes granted this year.”

At the event held on July 13, employees from J.H. Cohn’s New Jersey offices filled the lanes at the Hanover Bowling Lanes in East Hanover. Each bowler raised donations and sponsorships from friends, family, and clients.  Bowlers, other employees, and their families also participated in raffles and tricky tray auctions, which raised additional money for the event.  In addition, every year, J.H. Cohn is honored to host at the Bowl-A-Thon wish children and their families who have been granted wishes through the support of the event.

“Our goal was to exceed the $1 million fundraising mark with this year’s Bowl-A-Thon, and we exceeded it. J.H. Cohn is thrilled to reach this level of support for Make-A-Wish,” said Michael L. Cohen, office managing partner of J.H. Cohn’s Roseland office and director of the J.H. Cohn Foundation. “When we held our first Bowl-A-Thon in 2001, our goal was to raise $6,000 and it’s still amazing to see how this effort has grown and that each year, we’re able to far exceed our own expectations. I’m continually impressed by how our employees pull together for this very special organization and the children it serves.”

In recognition of J.H. Cohn’s longtime support of Make-A-Wish, Avis Rent A Car will award the Firm with the Avis Spirit Award, which is presented to individuals and organizations that exemplify the Avis “We Try Harder” spirit. Michael will receive the award at Yankee Stadium on July 21.

In addition to his work with the J.H. Cohn Foundation, Michael Cohen is also a Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Jersey board member. In fact, Make-A-Wish has asked him to share information on J.H. Cohn’s efforts with other companies that are looking for ways to engage their employees in supporting the Foundation.

In September, J.H. Cohn’s New York and Connecticut offices will hold another Bowl-A-Thon benefiting the Metro New York, Hudson Valley, and Connecticut chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Last month, the J.H. Cohn Foundation also donated a total of $150,000 to The Special Operations Warrior Foundation and the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, two of its Cohn for KidsSM supported charities, through the J.H. Cohn Annual Charity Golf Invitational, bringing the total support of those organizations to more than $400,000 each.
