J.H. Cohn Hosts “Inspiring Women for Success” for High School Students
5/10/2010
J.H. Cohn LLP recently hosted an event at its Roseland office for junior and senior students from Paterson Catholic High School in Paterson and Mary Help of Christians High School in North Haledon. The half-day session, “Inspiring Women for Success,” focused on the accounting profession, the importance of having a mentor, developing leadership skills, setting goals, and becoming a star performer.
The 25 female students in attendance are recipients of scholarships from the Tri-County Scholarship Fund, a 501(c)(3) private, non-sectarian organization committed to the care and development of economically disadvantaged children.
The event, which included a talk from J.H. Cohn CEO and Tri-County Board Member Thomas J. Marino, featured several presentations from J.H. Cohn accounting and human resources professionals. Each session was very interactive, with students having the opportunity to ask questions and speak with everyone in attendance.
Gregory Floyd, president of the Tri-County Scholarship Fund, explained the importance of this session for the students. “The girls were presented with another great picture of what’s open to them. They met women, just a few years older than them, who model a vision of success and possibilities. In addition, while experiencing a corporate environment, the students met with and listened to key leaders – both men and women – who explained the opportunities available to them. It’s incredibly gratifying to see the commitment J.H. Cohn has to children and their success.”
Carolyn D’Anna, partner, human resources managing director, and co-director of the J.H. Cohn Professional Women’s Program was among the speakers. She said, “The attrition of women in the accounting industry is an ongoing issue. It’s one of the reasons we offer learning and development opportunities for the Firm’s professional women through the J.H. Cohn Professional Women’s Program, and it’s why hosting programs such as this one for high school students is so important to us.”
“Inspiring Women for Success” is the third session that J.H. Cohn has hosted for students through Tri-County. In addition, last year, J.H. Cohn partners and professionals also participated in the New Jersey State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ “Pay It Forward” campaign in New Jersey high schools.
About the Tri-County Scholarship Fund
Tri-County Scholarship Fund, a not for profit 501 (c)(3) organization, is neither religious nor sectarian. It was founded in 1981 through the leadership of Edward L. Hennessy, Jr. retired CEO of Allied Signal and the Most Reverend Frank J. Rodimer. Alarmed by the decaying public school system and the mounting inequities in educational choice for families in poorer communities, Mr. Hennessy and Bishop Rodimer joined forces to create an organization that would provide scholarship assistance, based solely on financial need, for children to attend private school. Since 1981, over 27,000 scholarships have been awarded representing over $17 million in Tri-County Scholarship Fund assistance. For more information, visit www.tcsfund.org.
