Los Angeles, CA and Roseland, N.J. – June 11, 2008 – J.H. Cohn LLP, the largest independent accounting and consulting firm in the Northeast, has combined practices with Good Swartz Brown & Berns LLP (GSBB), a 120-employee, full-service accounting and consulting firm with offices in Los Angeles and Warner Center, effective immediately. GSBB will operate as Good Swartz Brown & Berns, a Division of J.H. Cohn.
The combination provides GSBB’s audit and tax clients with access to J.H. Cohn’s technical expertise and represents J.H. Cohn’s major expansion into Southern California and its ability to serve clients in the greater Los Angeles area and south through Orange County into San Diego. J.H. Cohn also maintains an office in San Diego, which it established in 1978.
“This strategic move enables us to more effectively serve the growing number of companies seeking to expand nationally and into global markets,” said Thomas J. Marino, chief executive officer of J.H. Cohn. “We’ve both built our practices largely around serving the middle-market, and now our clients will benefit from a bi-coastal accounting team, whose specialties span across multiple practice areas including forensic accounting, consulting services and specialized accounting services for a number of industries including retail, construction and manufacturing.”
The announcement marks J.H. Cohn’s fourth strategic regional expansion effort in the past 13 months, and supports its strategy to deepen its boutique expertise to best serve the middle market. In 2007, J.H. Cohn combined businesses with Berenson LLP (May 8) headquartered in New York City, Glastonbury, CT-based Haggett Longobardi (June 5), and Marden Harrison & Kreuter, in White Plains, NY (July 24).
The firm’s expansion to Los Angeles broadens its reach and international capabilities as a member of Nexia International, the world’s ninth-largest network of independent auditors, business advisors, and consultants.
GSBB offers a full spectrum of accounting, tax and business advisory services for middle market private and publicly-traded companies. GSBB serves clients in a wide variety of industries including real estate, manufacturing, distribution, retail, high-technology, and entertainment.
“For nearly five decades, we’ve committed ourselves to providing expert counsel on accounting and tax issues unique to our client base,” said Scott Sachs, managing partner, GSBB, who will serve as managing partner of GSBB/J.H. Cohn’s Los Angeles and Warner Center offices. “We look forward to expanding these resources, especially in a time when middle market companies, which are strapped for resources and time, are seeking guidance in an economic downturn and a declining market.”
